Wheatland, WY Prosecutor Eric Jones Threatens to Charge Parents of Proficient Student with Educational Neglect

Will the Platte County Commissioners do the Right Thing?

After attending two Platte County school board meetings, the blame game is still in full swing. County prosecutor Eric Jones, is saying that it is the school board that needs to drop the charges against these children, the school board is saying they didn’t know anything about it until after the cases were sent to the prosecutor, and both the school board and the prosecutor, Eric Jones, continue to point the blame at the former West Elementary principal, who was asked to resign at the end of the school year for other issues. While parents who used the public defender had the cases immediately dropped, parents who were too afraid that they would loose everything, based on Eric Jones’ scare tactics (telling parents that if they won, and couldn’t pay, the public defender could seize their assets) still face their children being prosecuted and/or placed on probation.

Letters can also be sent to the Platte County School Board requesting policy changes including steps and checks and balances to prevent circumvention of the law regarding attendance policies, and reassessing the actual definition of the term “truant” (acknowledging that if mom and/or dad (or guardian) excuse the child from school, that child has permission, and is excused.). The Platte County Commissioners [information below School Board contact info] should also be contacted requesting for the termination of Eric Jones, for his decision to prosecute children instead of the parents in this matter:
